Building Connections, Growing Leaders: Jessenia Preciado on the Future of Food Justice in Far Rockaway
At the first-ever Far Rockaway Food System Networking Breakfast, local educators, advocates, and community partners gathered to share ideas and explore collaborations for a healthier, more equitable food system. Among the voices leading the conversation was Jessenia Preciado, Teens for Food Justice’s Far Rockaway Regional Manager, whose work has been central to building both the Far Rockaway Farm Hub and the connections that make it thrive.

“One of the most gratifying parts of my role is hearing how the farm is impacting families, educators, community partners, and of course students, in their everyday lives,” Jessenia shared. She spoke of students proudly cooking meals at home using the greens they’ve grown, and of the joy they feel when their families love the results. These moments, she said, help students feel connected—not just to food, but to their families and community.
Connecting Food, Health, and Advocacy
For Jessenia, the work goes beyond growing produce. She and her team talk with students about how food affects health, and they confront the deeper issues behind food access in Far Rockaway.
“Why is it that we are building these farms in Far Rockaway? Why is it that the delis and supermarkets around here don’t have fresh leafy greens like the ones we see here at the farm?” she asked the room.
When students learn the answers, they begin to see themselves as advocates, using their voices to speak out about food justice and the changes they want to see.
Linking Students to Opportunity
Through classroom learning, afterschool programming, and internships, the Far Rockaway Farm Hub helps students build real-world skills that can lead to future careers. Jessenia has been intentional about expanding these pathways by connecting with local organizations in agriculture, nutrition, and food justice.
Partnerships with groups like The Campaign Against Hunger, the Child Center of NY, AMT’s Co-Op Program, and QIRT’s Work-Based Learning Program are already creating new opportunities for students—and Jessenia sees even more potential ahead.
“We know that students are leaders and that when they are given the tools and resources, they make deep and meaningful contributions to their communities,” she said.

Building a Just Food System for All
The Far Rockaway Farm Hub is part of Teens for Food Justice’s mission to ensure that every community has consistent access to fresh, healthy food and that young people have the tools to lead that change. In Far Rockaway, that means not only producing thousands of pounds of leafy greens and vegetables each year, but also ensuring that students are connected to the broader network of organizations and opportunities that can help them shape a healthier future for their neighborhood.
Jessenia closed her remarks with gratitude, inviting everyone in the room to continue building these connections: “We’re excited about expanding those connections to create even more opportunities for our students to explore meaningful careers and make lasting change.”❦

Habló de estudiantes que, con orgullo, cocinan en casa usando las verduras que han cultivado, y de la alegría que sienten cuando sus familias disfrutan el resultado. Estos momentos, dijo, ayudan a los estudiantes a sentirse conectados, no solo con los alimentos, sino también con sus familias y su comunidad.
Conectando la comida, la salud y la defensa comunitaria
Para Jessenia, el trabajo va más allá de cultivar productos frescos. Ella y su equipo conversan con los estudiantes sobre cómo la alimentación impacta la salud y enfrentan las causas más profundas detrás del acceso limitado a alimentos en Far Rockaway.
“¿Por qué estamos construyendo estas granjas en Far Rockaway? ¿Por qué las bodegas y supermercados de aquí no tienen vegetales frescos como los que vemos en la granja?” preguntó a los presentes.
Cuando los estudiantes comprenden estas respuestas, empiezan a verse a sí mismos como defensores, usando su voz para hablar sobre la justicia alimentaria y los cambios que quieren lograr.
Conectando a los estudiantes con oportunidades
A través del aprendizaje en el aula, programas extracurriculares y pasantías, el Far Rockaway Farm Hub ayuda a los estudiantes a desarrollar habilidades prácticas que pueden llevar a futuras carreras. Jessenia ha trabajado de manera intencional para ampliar estos caminos, conectando con organizaciones locales en agricultura, nutrición y justicia alimentaria.
